Dog Breeds
Choosing the right dog breed

Before choosing a dog, you should get images of the temperament and personality of the various dog breeds, and learn about dog behavior.
Evaluate yourself and your lifestyle, decide which dog breed characteristics would suit you best, and then choose the dog breed that has the personality you are looking for.
Later you cannot turn a dogs natural characteristics to ones that you would prefer.

Take the Border Collie for example. The Border Collie is the smartest dog breed, yes. However, they belong to the herding breeds, what means they are not good house pets. This dog breed has an obsessive need to do a job. Moreover, you will not be able to change this inherent characteristic!
On the other hand, take the toy poodle. This dog breed can be very choosy about food! Can you afford to have a dog that prefers caviar and pate?

Canine authority Roger Caras wisely advises: "Never buy the puppy. Buy the dog the puppy one day will be."

So, before you choose the dog breed ask yourself some questions and answer them honestly:

  • Why do you want a dog?
  • What is your work schedule?
  • How much time will you spend for dog training and dog exercise?
  • Would you walk one hour in the rain, snow, wind... even at 6 AM?
  • Who cares for the dog at weekends, travel, holiday?
  • Can you stand muddy paw prints or dog hair allover the house?
  • Is nail clipping, ear cleaning, brushing a dog horrible for you?
